Responses are not compressed

What the audit saw

The HTML was served without gzip, brotli, or deflate encoding.

Why it costs you

Text compresses to roughly a fifth of its size. On a slow mobile connection that is the difference between a page that appears and one that does not, and it costs one line of configuration.

How to find it on your site

  1. Confirm the response has no content-encoding
    curl -sSI -H 'Accept-Encoding: gzip, br' https://your-site.com/ | grep -iE 'content-encoding|content-length'
  2. nginx
    gzip on;
    gzip_types text/html text/css application/javascript application/json image/svg+xml;
    gzip_min_length 256;
    # brotli, if the module is present
    brotli on;
    brotli_types text/html text/css application/javascript application/json image/svg+xml;
  3. Caddy compresses by default; for Netlify add a header rule
    # netlify.toml
    [[headers]]
      for = "/*"
      [headers.values]
        Content-Encoding = "br" # only if your build already emits .br files

How to know it is fixed

curl -sSI -H 'Accept-Encoding: gzip' https://your-site.com/ | grep -i content-encoding
# expect: content-encoding: gzip (or br)

The part people get wrong

Compressing images again saves nothing and wastes CPU. This is for text only. Also check that a CDN in front is not stripping the header.
