The page title is missing or the wrong length

Audit check title · worth 8 of 100 points · all checks

What the audit saw

The <title> is absent, under 8 characters, or over 60 characters.

Why it costs you

The title is the blue link in a search result. Over 60 characters and Google truncates it mid-word; under 8 and there is nothing to click. It is the single strongest on-page ranking signal you fully control.

How to find it on your site

  1. See the title as a crawler sees it
    curl -s https://your-site.com/ | grep -o '<title>[^<]*</title>'
  2. A title that survives truncation
    <title>Primary topic — qualifier that earns the click</title>
    <!-- 50-60 chars; put the topic first, the brand last -->
  3. Generate it from the page data instead of hardcoding
    const title = `${post.title} — ${site.name}`.slice(0, 60);

How to know it is fixed

Length between 8 and 60 characters, and unique per page. Check the rendered HTML, not the template: client-side routing often leaves the title of the first page on every route.

The part people get wrong

Every page sharing one title is worse than a long title. Uniqueness matters more than exact length.
