Images have no alt text

Audit check img_alt · worth 5 of 100 points · all checks

What the audit saw

At least one <img> is missing the alt attribute.

Why it costs you

Alt text is what a screen reader says and what is shown when the image fails to load. It is also the only text signal an image carries, so it is how image search finds the file.

How to find it on your site

  1. List the images missing alt
    curl -s https://your-site.com/ | grep -o '<img[^>]*>' | grep -v 'alt='
  2. Describe the content, not the file
    <img src="chart.png" alt="Latency by region, EU lowest at 42 ms" width="800" height="450" loading="lazy">
  3. Decorative images take an empty alt, not none
    <img src="divider.svg" alt="">

How to know it is fixed

No <img> without an alt attribute. Empty alt="" is valid for decoration.

The part people get wrong

alt="image" or alt="logo" passes a naive check and helps nobody. Write what the image shows.

Check it against your own site

Open an issue with your URL and a bot runs this check plus 14 others, posts the failures with the measured values, and publishes a report page: free audit. If you want the fixes applied and re-verified instead: fixed-price tiers.
